Bombay Local Pizza: Interesting Indian Style Pizza

As a desi, I love my curries. But as an American I love my pizza too.

When I heard that a new pizza place called Bombay Local Pizza had opened in Voorhees with Indian flavored pies, I was eager to try them.

For nothing gives me greater joy than Indian flavored spicy food.

Bombay Local Pizza Ambience

When I walked into Bombay Local Pizza around 12:30PM over the weekend, the place was empty except for the waitstaff. A Telugu waiter was mopping the floor and another bloke was arranging takeout menus near the entrance.

As you enter Bombay Local Pizza, you have the tables and soda machine on the right, and cash/order counter and kitchen at the rear end. Rest rooms are on the far left corner at the back.

The restaurant was clean and tables were neatly arranged. Every table has spice powders like crushed red chilly, black pepper powder, salt, dry ginger powder and powdered cheese.

We were greeted with a smile by the Gujarati owner Sagar.

You walk up to the counter, pick up a menu and place your order and wait at a table for your pizza.

We ordered a Bombay Masala ($5.50) and a Desi Paneer Pizza ($6.00) with a special request for extra spicy sauce.

It took about 20 minutes for our pizzas to arrive.

First, our Bombay Masala Pizza arrived followed a couple of minutes later by the Desi Paneer Pizza.

Both pizzas arrived piping hot. Here's our take on the two Indian pizzas:

Bombay Masala Pizza

The 10-inch Bombay Masala Pizza was neatly cut into eight pieces.

Bombay Masala Pizza, according to the menu, is a traditional pizza infused with a special blend of Indian spices.

It looked like a cheese pizza daubed with reddish-brown colored Indian spice sauces.

Bombay Masala Pizza included cheese, tomato paste and sauces prepared with Indian spices. Cheese, tomato paste and Indian spice sauces were evenly spread.

Bombay Masala Pizza was tangy and much relished. While the Pizza was good, the edges were way too crisp and as the pizza got colder the edges became very hard.

Desi Paneer Pizza

According to the menu, Desi Paneer Pizza is traditional pizza topped with paneer blended with an assortment of robust herbs and spices.

Desi Paneer Pizza included about 15 cubes of cottage cheese. Paneer cubes were fresh, absorbed the spicy sauce and were tasty.

With a mild Pav Bhaji masala flavor, Desi Panner Pizza was delicious. While I had no complaints with the pizza per se, the edges were initially crisp and soon became hard as the pizza became colder.

Polite Service

Unlike most Indian restaurants in New Jersey area, service at Bombay Local Pizza was friendly, polite and professional.

We were greeted with a warm smile and ordering was a pleasant experience.

Our waiter was helpful and attentive. When he realized our table was too cramped for two pizzas, he immediately moved a nearby table to make it comfortable.

The same waiter got us two thick plastic plates.

We were not charged for Soda as the ice dispenser at the soda machine was not working properly but we were charged 50-cents extra for the Bombay Masala pizza.

By the way, Bombay Local Pizza also offers a really spicy 'Four Alarm' pizza. Since we were already stuffed to the gills, we gave it the pass this time.

Bombay Local Pizza Rating

On the whole I found the concept of pizza with Indian spice sauces interesting.

Indian Pizza tastes different compared to the mainstream American pizzas. My only complaint was that you have to pay 50-cents extra per topping.

All in all, I found Bombay Local Pizza a refreshing change compared to the usual Indian restaurant with the same old Tandoori Chicken, Palak Paneer, Alu Gobi, Samosa, Lassi etc. If you ask me, I loved the Desi Paneer Pizza compared to the Bombay Masala Pizza.

While the two pizzas were good, I found it odd that there were no other customers in the one hour or so I spent at Bombay Local Pizza. That does not augur well for this new restaurant. - © Sagar.com
